I will admit that I looked at the Advent Word for today with a bit of trepidation. “Go”? I don’t need any more “go” in my life! Especially at this time of year, I feel like I am going all the time. But then I took a look at the word for tomorrow, which is “rest.” Whoever made this Advent Word list obviously knew what they were doing. Go and rest really do belong together. They complement each other.
Certainly, there are many times in our lives when we are called to go. If we look at the life of Jesus, he was going much of the time – teaching, preaching, showing people about God’s love and encouraging them to share that love with others. But Jesus also took times for rest, to be by himself and to be in prayer. His life was not all go. Nor was it all rest. It was finding the balance between the two.
I hope during this Advent season that you will be able to find that balance as well. There will definitely be lots of times of go. We are called to serve God in the world; to go and share the Good News of God’s love, and especially to share the Good News of Jesus’ birth at this time of year. But we are also called to rest; to care for ourselves and to nurture our own relationship with God. May Advent be a time of both go and rest for you.
