Advent Word 2 - Visit

Posted by Bethany Nelson on

I recently returned from  a few days of vacation in Chicago to see family.  When I told people that was my plan for vacation, more than one person told me, "Oh, that's not a vacation … that's a visit."  The implication being that vacations are fun, while visits are obligations.  That may be true sometimes, but for me, this visit was life-giving.  To see people I don't get to see very often and to share with one another the joy of Thanksgiving was definitely an enriching and enlivening experience for me.

Consider Mary … after she heard the news from the angel that she was going to be the mother of Jesus, one of the first things she did was to visit one of her family members, Elizabeth.  For her, this was not a dreary obligation, but instead it was a time to be renewed and refreshed.  It was a time to be given hope that she could do this; she could be the mother of Jesus.  It is interesting to me that after receiving life-altering news, one of the first things she did was visit family.

I hope and I pray during this Advent season that you will have a chance to visit with those who are close to you.  Maybe it's blood family.  Maybe it's chosen family.  Maybe it's someone you see all the time.  Maybe it's someone you haven't seen in a long while.  May those important relationships renew and refresh you as you visit with one another.
