One of my favorite Christmas hymns is “Joy to the World.” (Fun fact … “Joy to the World” was not intended as a Christmas song. It was actually inspired by Psalm 98. It’s imagery, however, is perfect for Christmas!) I always feel such joy during the Advent and Christmas season. Regardless of what may be happening in my life or in the world, I can’t help but feel the joy of celebrating the birth of the Christ child deep in my soul. “Joy to the World” captures that joy perfectly for me, calling on heaven and nature to SING.
Now, I realize that not everyone considers themselves a good singer. But, we can all raise our voices in joy! We can all raise our voices in shouts and songs of praise to God. I encourage you to find a song of joy to sing this Advent season. Whether or not you are feeling joyful, it is always a good time to praise. It is always a good time to celebrate the love of God made known to us in the Christ Child. This Advent season, let us heed the words of the Psalmist who declares, “Sing aloud to God our strength; shout for joy to the God of Jacob. Raise a song, sound the tambourine …” (Psalm 81:1-2)
